La Dolorosa de Salzillo de Lorquí is exhibited in the Museum of the capital with other works by the Murcian sculptor (03/12/2018)

The Salzillo Museum of Murcia welcomes for the first time and incorporates in an extraordinary way to its sample and catalog the sculpture of La Dolorosa from the Parish of Santiago Apóstol de Lorquí.

The piece is part of the salzillezco group of three sculptures, together with San José and El Niño and Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno -the only one that remains of the author in the Region-, which due to its exceptionality deserved the Declaration of Cultural Interest in 2011 and for which the municipality was integrated into the so-called 'Cities of Salzillo'.

These two sculptures were already transferred to the Salzillo Museum on the occasion of a special exhibition in May 2017, that of San José and El Niño, and on the occasion of the celebration of the Magna Procesión, the Nazarene, in November of last year.

The exhibition of La Dolorosa thus closes the collaboration established between the Museum, Lorquí City Council and Cabildo de Cofradías for the exhibition of the three works by the Murcian sculptor in the capital.

The act of presentation of the work has taken place in the Sketch Room of the Museum, where he will remain for his visit from December 3 to March 5, and was chaired by the president of the Executive Committee of the Museum Salzillo, Antonio Gómez Fayrén;

the director of the Museum, María Teresa Marín;

the mayor of Lorquí, Joaquín Hernández;

the parish priest of Santiago Apóstol, Felipe Tomás, and the curator of the exhibition, Emilio Marco.

The image that will be exhibited in the Museum is made, by the sculptor, after the most recognized creation of this iconography La Dolorosa de Jesús.

Thus, for Lorquí, Salzillo will pose a younger canon of the Virgin where the rococo delicacy, to which the author was no stranger in his production, shows both modeling and exquisite polychrome.

It deserves special mention that La Dolorosa de Lorquí retains both the textile and silver garments conceived by Salzillo himself, which makes it a unique case in the history of Spanish art.

"La Dolorosa de Lorquí made by Salzillo in the 1760s is a milestone in this iconography of Baroque genius and at the same time it is quite unknown, so contemplate it in the Salzillo Museum in front of the most famous of its Dolorosas is an occasion wonderful for all lovers of Baroque art and for the people of Lorquí ", assured Marco.

The exhibition is the result of joint work and collaboration developed between the Parish of Santiago Apóstol de Lorquí, the Salzillo Museum and the Lorquí City Council in recent years that began in 2017 with the presentation of the Ilorcitana Holy Week poster in the Church of Lorquí. Jesus and that has been adding other initiatives and projects throughout this time.

The president of the Brotherhood and Museum said that "we are very happy to follow the program of collaboration we have established with Lorquí to go on exhibiting the works of Salzillo that are treasured there and that we receive and guard with deep gratitude and respect."

For its part, the director said that the samples that have taken place over these years are the result of the collaboration and generosity of Lorquí so that the many visitors to the museum can see these works.

The parish priest of the municipality has indicated that he is very happy that the visitors to the museum can approach the figure of the Virgin through the work of Salzillo, although he recognizes that his absence in the Parish will be lived with sadness.

The mayor thanked the great welcome that, once again, the Salzillo Museum has given to the people of Lorquí and has highlighted the importance of this type of twinning between institutions that have so much and so much value in common.

"For our people, the images of Sazillo are a very important value, both religiously and artistically, heritage and tourism, and it is an immense joy for us to bring to this Museum the legacy that Lorquí has from the master sculptor, in this case through the magnificent piece of La Dolorosa de Salzillo to be contemplated by the many visitors who come to the Museum. "

"For years it has been working constantly for the study and dissemination of the heritage Salzillesco Lorquí treasures, and this exhibition intends to continue putting value on the exceptional eighteenth-century set that Lorquí has known how to conserve," stressed the curator of the exhibition.
