The Plenary of the City Council of Lorquí approves to request the declaration of "catastrophic zone" after the storm Dana (20/09/2019)

The Plenary of the City Council of Lorquí unanimously approved yesterday a motion to ask the Central Government for the declaration of 'area seriously affected by civil protection emergency' (catastrophic zone) for the municipality after the effects of torrential rains and day floods September 12 and 13.

During this episode of adverse weather events, an important part of the municipality was flooded by water, flooding both garden areas and private homes, and causing numerous destruction on public roads, infrastructure and rural roads.

There were several families that had to be evicted from their homes and even today there are those who have not been able to return to their homes.

The mayor, Joaquín Hernández, said that the actions were immediate, after knowing the danger situation, and that the first interventions focused on "ensuring and guaranteeing people's lives" putting everyone safe.

At the same time it was proceeding to the cut of roads affected by the water, leaving the municipality completely isolated, so "there was a very unpleasant and worrying situation."

In this regard, he stressed that there were 24-hour work days of the municipal services and the Local Police in collaboration with Civil Protection of Lorquí, and other municipalities that came to help, Red Cross and volunteers and residents of the town who helped in the First tasks to ensure safety.

Days later, the work focused on re-enabling the homes of those affected, and that, currently, work is being done on lots and orchards.

"We are focusing all the work of the City Council on returning to normal, which is why the Office of Information for the Affected has been enabled, as well as machinery, companies and workers that can cope with cleaning and water drainage have been hired ".

In addition, he said that they are studying the municipal aid that will be approved to help the neighbors after the storm Dana.

Hernández stressed that there are already about 400 applications that have been registered in the service office and that a first economic balance would place the losses at a total of approximately 9 million euros.

The mayor also stressed that aid and subsidies will also be required from the Regional Government, because the involvement of all administrations in the recovery of our towns and cities is necessary.

In addition, he took the opportunity to thank all the people who have collaborated and helped in these tasks, allowing the municipality to return to normal little by little.
